Chronic Carpus Pain: Causes and Treatments

Wrist pain is very common among hard laborers and professional athletes. There are many ways to prevent and treat this issue, but it can lead to its chronic stages if left unattended. Severe damages may occur, especially if repetitive and stressful activities are done regularly. This is the reason why doctors don’t often advise the use of pain relievers when people feel the irritation. You feel it because something’s wrong with your body. It serves as a warning, and you have to take care of the condition before it gets worse.

Different Categories

The wrist is composed of many parts. Thus, there are also many kinds of wrist issues that are often categorized by the regions affected. If the pain is severe and it’s impossible for you to locate its origins, the best thing you can do is to consult a specialist for accurate diagnostic procedures. Here are some of the common wrist problems experienced by lots of people these days.

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Wrist Nerve Pain
  • TFCC
  • De Quervain’s Syndrome
  • Chronic Wrist Pain

The carpal tunnel is a band-like structure inside the wrist to hold the nerves and tendons together in one place. It’s located just below the palms of your hands that often gets stressed when you perform physical activities like playing competitive sports and doing construction work. As it gets irritated and inflamed, the band tightens up and that affects all the parts passing through it. With a tight carpal tunnel, moving your fingers can be very difficult.

Doctors often advise patients to rest their wrist first before considering a major operation. Splints and casts are applied to restrict the part of movements that might aggravate the condition. After a few weeks or months, depending on the severity of the problem, you will be able to use your hands normally. If this doesn’t solve the problem, chronic pain coming from it can only be resolved through an operation.

Sports and Activities that Involve Grasping

Grasping is a common body movement that people do every day. You do it when you write on a piece of paper, or hold a tennis racket in a friendly match. When people exercise in the gym, it’s impossible to lift weights without a tight grip. This movement can cause damages, especially if done repetitively in strenuous levels. This is often experienced by many athletes, especially gymnasts, tennis players, weight lifters, and rowers.Chronic Wrist pain

While this condition, also called as de Quervain’s syndrome, is common to athletes, people with degenerative disorders are prone to it. If you are suffering from arthritis, you are most likely to have this condition if you’re grasping objects too often. Women are also found to have higher risks, probably because they often perform the most household chores. Like the CTS, splints are also done to treat this condition. This allows the tendons to heal, usually from four to six weeks. Pain medication is also needed if it’s already chronic in nature. For severe cases, you will have to undergo surgery.
